Hi,

As you may have noticed the Friends of Chorlton Green group isn't very active any more. We haven't met for a couple of years now!

Why? A number of reasons I suppose. We originally formed to look after the green both from an environmental and social point of view.

The environmental aspects are handled very capably these days by the council and residents are able to get in touch to report any problems. The Beech Road Traders association also look after the Green and have taken on the task of sorting the Christmas tree each year.

The social issues we were having when we formed were mainly due to the way the Horse and Jockey was being run imho. The transformation of the pub in recent years has also transformed the local area and the usage of the green. It's now used regularly for community events and these days you're more likely to see a farmer's market outside the pub in the evening than police!

Many thanks to all who participated in the group, it was very worthwhile. We started the Christmas tree tradition, installed the lecterns, planted a few bulbs and paved the way for long term care of the Green itself.

Hello!

We haven't got together this summer but the next event will probably be on the 28th August on the Green and will be to get together to renovate the plants at the end of the green and by the lychgate with the aid of the council and a CASH grant.

More details when we have them!

Chorlton's Big Green Festival

March 2009 Meeting Summary

The March 5th meeting went well and it was good to get together again! Here is a brief summary for anyone interested:

Group members will be at Chorlton's Big Green Festival on 4th April.
Content for the lecterns on the green will be done soon.
No plans for 2009 yet, possibly a green and alley clean-up event.
Horse and Jockey changes discussed with owners and well received.

The next meeting will be on 14th May 2009, venue TBC.

Bank Holiday 100 Days Event on the Green!

Come along to Chorlton Green and Beech Road Park on Sunday 4th May and enjoy free events to help local residents make the most of their local environment.

Friends of Chorlton Green and Friends of Beech Road Park have joined forces with Manchester City Council to stage two events on Bank Holiday Sunday from 12.30pm at Chorlton Green and Beech Road Park. Activities will include:

Hanging basket workshops – free plants and baskets will be provided with experts on hand to help you make your own hanging basket to improve the streets of Chorlton.
On Chorlton Green our 100 days Climate change clinic will be on hand giving advice on how you can reduce your environmental footprint by taking small steps around the home and in the workplace.
Pledge to reduce your use of plastic bags. Sign the campaign to reduce plastic bags in Chorlton.
Enter our free prize draw to win £500 by giving us your views on recycling in Manchester.
Bug hotel workshops – materials provided to make your own bamboo bug hotel, to help the biodiversity of your garden.
Litter clean up, pruning and wildflower & shrub planting of public footpath next to Chorlton Green churchyard.
Free 100 days t- shirts, energy saving gifts and refreshments for volunteers taking part.

Just come along on the day and enjoy 100 days to a cleaner, greener city in Chorlton!

March 2008 Meeting

The next meeting of the group will be on Wednesday 12th March 2008 at 7.30pm at St. Clements Church. Everyone is welcome, so if you haven't been before come along to get involved and meet your neighbours! The agenda for the meeting is:

“Chorlton Village in Bloom”
Notice Boards on the Green
Maintenance of the old church yard
Green conservation (paving, planting etc.)
Any other business.

January Meeting Review

The January 23rd meeting took place as planned in the Lead Station. Thanks to the Lead Station for their support of the group. Councillors, council officials, representatives from the police and other services along with residents were at the meeting.

The main news is that the group is planning a conservation and planting event on and around Chorlton Green in early May to co-incide with the Manchester City Council 2008 100 Days Campaign.

January 2008 Meeting

The next meeting of the Friends of Chorlton Green group will be on 23rd January 2008 at 7.30pm. The venue for this meeting is the first floor function room at The Lead Station, 99 Beech Road. Thanks in advance to the Lead Station for their support of the group. The agenda is as follows:

Christmas 2007 Meeting Review

The 2007 Christmas Meeting was a great success!

What did we do? Well...(deep breath)...we decorated the tree railings with holly, drank tea, planted bulbs for spring around the green, ate mince pies, cleared leaves from the green, met new people and neighbours, ate biscuits, made festive decorations, did face painting and sang carols!

Thanks to everyone who turned up to help out, we look forward to the next one!

Christmas 2007 Meeting Invite

The Christmas Meeting will be on the green itself from 1-4pm on 9th December and will have a festive feel!

We'll be getting together to chat and do activites including making festive crafts, tidying up the green, planting bulbs for springtime and enjoying hot drinks and mince pies. We may even sing a carol or two!

Everyone is welcome, come and join in!

October 2007 Meeting Review

Our last meeting in the Horse and Jockey went well. News from the meeting includes:

CCTV has been temporarily located by police on the junction of Whitelow Road and Beech Road facing the green and will be in place for 6 weeks on a trial period.
Recycle bins for use by users of the Green are likely to be located in the walkway adjacent to the lychgate and old cemetary.
Environmental Health are to be contacted regarding the situation with Taxis using horns to alert customers rather than using the ringback method.

Look out for the flyers about our next meeting, it will be a festive one!
